Welcome to Combat Academy
Combat Academy is the UK’s number one self defence training provider. We teach truly effective self defence training and martial arts training for members of the public. We cater for all levels of fitness and ability from beginners to advanced. We also run specialised programmes for women, youths/kids, student travel safe as well as corporate team building events.
Our format combines classes, courses and seminars. We are different from many traditional martial arts as our focus is on the ability to defend yourself without complicated techniques that fail under pressure. Our unique system combines aspects of some of the most effective martial arts.
We teach Greco Roman Wrestling, Krav Maga and Combat Academy’s own Military Unarmed Combat system. Our system takes into account that when defending against an attack many skills are required to defend against many different types of attack from kicks and punches to wrestling, choking and ground fighting, knives and gangs (multiple attackers). The techniques we teach you will allow you to defend yourself against punches, kicks, blunt weapons, knives, defence and escapes from the floor, grabbing attacks, bladed weapons, psychological self defence, voice commands and personal protection theory.

“When I left school I knew I wanted to be involved in the security industry. With not a lot of experience in martial arts, I knew I needed some help. I looked on the Internet at various martial art classes but Combat Academy really stood out. I got in touch and within the week Richard contacted me. On my first session he made me feel very welcome and taught me a lot in very little time. Once my induction was over I attended Richard’s sessions on a regular basis. His knowledge and experience has really brought me a long way since I started. He is patient, friendly, and has made me feel more confident in myself to tackle everyday life and the career I would like to pursue. I would recommend Combat Academy to anyone who wants to pursue a career like me, wants to learn self defence or to anybody who just wants to get fit and have alot of fun at the same time”.
From my initial inquiry about Combat Academy Richard has been attentive to detail. He is incredibly passionate and his energy and pride is infectious. I approached Combat Academy at a time when I was in a very dark place. Having had been in a very toxic and abusive relationship, it was suggested that I look into self defense classes. Dubious to say the least I made my inquiries and Richard put me at ease from the very first interaction with him. He asked me questions although was always very considerate as not to pry. Having now attended 5 sessions, I am pleased to say that Richard has really helped me along my road to recovery. He has always been considerate and conscious of the experiences I have been through and will always check to make sure that I really am okay. He is flexible and encourages you to make as many classes as you can but there is no pressure to feel like you have to attend every week. For me this works out perfectly as a single parent and having only every other weekend free I can’t commit to make every Sunday. He’ll work you hard and you certainly feel it for the week to follow but I feel invigorated, confident and empowered to take on the world. Thank you.
Thank you so much Magdy and Em for the sessions you delivered to our targeted young people. Over the six weeks the young people gained an immense amount of skills, knowledge and expertise into how to take care of themselves in difficult situations.
Without exception all the young people expressed their enjoyment of the sessions which were delivered in a professional manner. The needs of the young people were varied and at times challenging however outcomes were achieved by all the young people present. One specific outcome/breakthrough came when a young person, coming from a chaotic background, engaged with ongoing encouragement from both of you.
Thank you so much once again for your patience, time and professional expertise in ensuring these sessions were delivered in an appropriate manner within a relaxed and friendly environment.
As a service we would highly recommend your services to other professionals seeking personal safety sessions.
My job requires me to deal with some violent people at times and I felt the training I received from the job was lacking. I chose Combat Academy to improve my capabilities because not only are the techniques effective but the philosophy behind their work is to enable safely neutralising a threat with a proportional response. I encourage anyone who has confidence issues or just wants to feel safer in day to day life to try it. I have been training with Em and Magdy for a few months now they are very friendly and expertly take you at your own pace with no pressure.
It’s sad but true – normal life is not as simple as stepping into a boxing ring or an MMA cage. In real life, an attack may come from the shadows…without the warning of a bell, without a referee to stop it if it gets too one sided. In this day an age, there seems an increasing number of those out there that would sooner take than earn…and we are all those people’s next potential victims in waiting. To try and ‘target harden’ ourselves to such events, there are countless things out there you could try – but what do you really need? You need strength, fitness and both mental and physical speed. You need to know techniques designed to give you the upper hand quickly and effectively. You also need to know the limits….what is ‘too far?’. Above all else, you need the confidence to knit all that together.
Admittedly certain things will give you some of those – you may get fit in a gym for instance….you may become a good fighter with a Thai boxing coach…but Combat Academy tick EVERY box. This really is self defence at its most raw. Up close and personal, realistic, intense. Designed to test you at your most vulnerable and push you beyond where you believe your limits lie – yet still be able to coach it all in a fun way that keeps you coming back for more every week. As someone with several years of home office approved security training, I certainly felt there was a place for Combat Academy in my personal skill set. And that remains the case to this day. No matter what your age, your ability, your fitness level…give it a go…one day, when you least expect it, you may just be glad you did.
My son (13 years old) and I started training with Combat Academy in April 2015. We attend a 2 hour training session every Saturday.
My primary goal was for both of us to learn self defense skills. My son has a 30 minute walk home from secondary school, long stretches of which are in isolated areas. As a mother I wanted my son to have the skills to be safe on his journeys when alone. As a woman of slight build, I too wanted to have skills to keep me safe, should I ever be chosen as a target for an attack.
Since we have started training with Combat Academy, we have both learned a lot about defending ourselves. Our training has helped in so very many ways. I can honestly say Combat Academy has changed our lives. As a mother, I am elated to see my son develop his confidence. I feel safe in the knowledge that he can handle himself if anything untoward should happen to him, or anyone he is travelling with. For me personally, I’ve developed a new level of confidence in my ability to stay safe too. We’ve seen a vast improvement in our levels of fitness and strength. We’ve learned a lot about the psychology of attacks and the choices we can make to help prevent being chosen as a victim. The training is suitable for all levels of fitness and the skills we have been learning are really effective.
Both my son and I have signed up for membership with Combat Academy and have a passion for training. I highly recommend that anyone interested in learning reality based self defense that’s effective, Combat Academy is the very first place to go. The instructors are keen, skilled, practiced and encouraging. They work tirelessly to turn their students into capable individuals, ready to defend themselves. For that, I thank them.
A great fun way to learn how to defend your self, build confidence and a hobby. Richard makes all sessions effective and with a lesson to be learnt – he ensures all students are comfortable and understand why and how certain moves are effective and to what extent. All sessions are flexible around your availability which makes it great for me. I would definitely recommend it whether you just want to build your confidence or are traveling alone regularly. Richard puts his heart and soul into his sessions which is why I thoroughly enjoy them and have introduced my friends.
Grapevine Essex is a charity which provides fully supported recreational and educational activities for adults with learning difficulties in Essex. We approached Richard from the Combat Academy, Chelmsford, to run a self-defence class for some of our members over the Easter break. They had to fill in a medical questionnaire in advance so that Richard was well aware of any possible problems which could arise.
To begin with, we had a question and answer session on what constitutes bullying and how we may present ourselves to a possible bully as an easy target without even realising it.
Richard discussed ways of making ourselves ‘safe’ whilst out and about…for example, if you have to use your mobile phone, then make sure your back is against a wall so that you cannot be attacked from behind. He stressed the importance of not having earphones over both ears to make us more aware of our surroundings.
We then got onto how we can protect ourselves from a possible attack to the head area. Richard explained very carefully all steps involved and made sure he involved everyone even those sitting out on the side. We practised how we should place our legs, arms, hands and elbows to fend off an attack to the head. This was repeated many times and will stick in their memories, I am sure.
All the time, Richard was very professional, caring and made sure everyone completed the manoeuvres carefully. Excellent session and I would thoroughly recommend Richard to any other group looking for self-defence instruction.
After having a rather frightening experience whilst walking home after work one evening, I signed up to Combat Academy in Chelmsford. Right from the beginning when Richard gave me a call to explain exactly how Combat Academy worked, I felt reassured by his helpful and informative manner. I have been attending the weekly classes now for around 7 sessions, and my confidence and skills are growing. All the attendees are also great and friendly, and that helps a lot. Not only do you learn techniques and theory, but there is an element of fitness to Richard’s classes, working on core strength – which sets my weekend off to a good start!
Richard is a great instructor, he’s encouraging and passionate about his role – and it’s for those very reasons that I am there every Saturday at 8am in a field, come rain or shine. You are not going to become a self defence expert in a week, but it’s with Richard’s dedication and great teaching, I genuinely feel that if a situation did arise, I would feel a lot more confident in how to deal with a situation (hopefully it will never happen) whereby I would need to use those skills. I can’t recommend Combat Academy enough.
“I have done a few different self defence classes over the years but this is, as far as I am concerned, the best ‘real world’ self defence system I have been taught. My instructor, Richard, demonstrates and explains the techniques in a way I find easy to understand. Added to this the fact my fitness levels have improved too is a welcome bonus.”
“I often work late into the evening and frequently end up walking alone to a deserted multi storey car park that can be intimidating even in summer months. I saw a local advert for Combat Academy training and thought it might be useful to attend an induction course to give me a bit an idea of how to defend myself if needed. I also have 2 secondary school age daughters and was keen for them to come along with me and learn some useful skills. We were all nervous about attending the session as we didn’t really know what to expect, but there was no need to be anxious about it – everyone was very friendly and welcoming and Richard, our instructor, made it fun whilst we learnt some invaluable techniques to put into practice. After the induction we realised that we wanted to increase our knowledge and become more confident with the moves. What I hadn’t expected was the inclusion of a full body workout as part of the training session – this was a real bonus as I could combine improved fitness with increasing my self confidence. We continue to attend training sessions whenever we can and love being able to training outdoors – I really didn’t expect this to become a long term habit but it is!”
“At the end of 2014 I set myself the objective for 2015 of learning the basics of defending myself against unarmed assault from a larger, stronger attacker. Additionally, I didn’t want to make a major commitment in terms of time and money. I stumbled upon Combat Academy Chelmsford and am delighted now to reflect on the past few months and say I have achieved my objective and within those limitations.
The education in the core principles, starting with personal space and distance, whilst appearing at first unspectacular, gave me an immediate return. And I have continued to learn vital skills with each session. On top of this I have met some really nice people and have gained an enthusiasm for the mix of styles upon which the Combat Academy system is based. So now I enthusiastically look ahead to carrying on this journey!
Unlike making a commitment to learning, say, a martial art, arriving at my first session was not daunting, and there was no long-term scheduling and budgeting to do up front to make it fit with family life. The early sessions don’t carry this burden (there’s no feeling of an all-or-nothing commitment) and yet you learn from day one.
That said, thereafter – the next few sessions – is where you might require some resilience to stick with it. Why? Because it (the system) doesn’t have a fancy name or include (at first) Hollywood moves that might compensate for the frustrations of struggling to learn the initial technical stuff. Unknowingly, you will have immediately started to learn a very effective system of self-defence, but you need a few sessions – at your pace – to get that first “oh yeah, this stuff really works ” feeling. Like learning anything, you have to be patient and have faith; give Combat Academy about 5 or 6 sessions and you will gain confidence about defending yourself”.
“The youths’ self defence boot camp training in Chelmsford, Essex is GREAT FUN, lots to learn and helps build confidence. The techniques really work you don’t need to be big and strong”.
“My daughter and I would like to say just how much we enjoyed Saturday (even with the wind and rain!). We found it informative and my daughter loved the practical side. She came away buzzing. We would definitely recommend”.
“The self defence classes are not only helping me to learn techniques, they are boosting my confidence. Ever since I began, I’ve been mentally ready for a possible confrontation and always keeping my eyes peeled. Chances are that I won’t need to put anything in practice, but knowing how to react should the situation sparks is priceless”.
“Hi Richard, I have to applaud you for your dedication to assisting young people such as my son, to come out of their shell, and defend themselves in times of trouble. My son did enjoy himself today by participating in the self defence beginners training session. We look forward to joining you and other participants in next week’s practice on Saturday”.
“Just wanted to give you a personal thank you for all your hard work yesterday at the event. We have had some great feedback on you guys and hopefully will lead to us working together again (you guys made me look great for finding you). Thanks again”.
“All junior day girls were given the opportunity to take part in a four week self defence course run by Combat Academy in the first half of the spring term and the senior girls in the second half! The course lasted for four weeks and consisted of both practical and actual strategies to use in a variety of situations which the girls might encounter as they went about their daily lives to and from school on public transport and round and about at the weekends. Obviously none of us expect to find ourselves faced with an uncomfortable situation and are unlikely ever to deal with anything but, as they say in the scouts ‘BE PREPARED’.
Combat Academy provided excellent and fun tuition, putting the girls at their ease as they put them through their paces – what to do if someone tries to come up to you aggressively, what to do if you are grabbed from behind, how to throw someone to the ground – but always with emphasis on making good your escape and using only necessary force. The final sessions was, arguably, the most fun, as six nine year old boys came along to act as would-be attackers! Although the emphasis was, indeed, on having fun with the skills involved, there was a clear message that the girls had been given strategies which, hopefully they will never need to use but which are they should it prove to be necessary”.
“Fourth form girls really enjoyed their sessions with Bronwyn and Anthony. Their lesson was paced really well and used an excellent structure to demonstrate the moves, give a chance for the girls to be active and mirror the instructors in a safe environment. There was purposeful progression and a clear development week to week”.
“Kyra had the best time at Combat Academy, she started off wanting to go just for one day, then ended up going everyday thereafter. It is such a fabulous healthy way to spend the holidays. Thanks so much”.
“I would thoroughly recommend Bronwyn and Anthony Sutton at Combat Academy Guildford, they are extremely professional, friendly and trustworthy. It was so great to see my thirteen year old daughter learning life saving skills in such a fun and focused environment, I would highly recommend this course”.
“You guys are a kick ass couple who have really helped me regain confidence
COMBAT ADDICT FOR LIFE”.
“The instructors Bronwyn and Anthony are brilliant at what they do and always push you to do that little bit extra that you think you cant do but then you do it and feel so awesome! I love taking part in Combat Academy the self defence side and the fitness gauntlets, I am certainly not the fittest by any means but I am getting there while having fun and learning useful skills. On a final note Bronwyn was right I did make new friends and thoroughly enjoy being part of the Combat Family”.
“I joined the Combat Academy team back in May of this year as a student to learn self defence, a very worthy and practical skill for most people, let alone for women. Throughout my time of training, it has been a great rewarding and enjoyable time spent with the team over the weeks, with excellent instruction provided by Bronwyn and Anthony Sutton, who are very committed and endeavour to provide a great learning experience in a very welcoming environment. It is also been a great experience to meet my new fellow combaters travelling the same journey that I myself have experienced resulting in my first stripe following my first grading experience in November. The sessions themselves although conducted professionally are also held with great spirit and with fun within the team. So yes, its hard work but enjoyable, fun and rewarding! Thanks to the Guildford and Woking Combat team…its been a pleasure!”
“Lauren had a fantastic time and was full of confidence when she came home showing us some moves and flattening her dad to the floor in one of the learnt moves!”
“I would like to say that Combat Academy were brilliant to deal with, from my initial enquiry to the final bespoke self defence programme for a group of teenage girls, the whole process was smooth, friendly and efficient. Added to this the girls had a great time and learnt some new skills. Thanks again and am spreading the word!”
“An exciting, exhilarating, educational and essential form of self defence for any lone worker. A highly recommended and worthwhile session”.
“A great afternoon, learnt a lot and had fun at the same time”.
“A really excellent session to empower oneself”.
“Thanks for the introduction to Combat Academy today. Had loads of fun and picked up some really useful skills. Definitely looking into joining up”.
“Brilliant fun had by all at Harry’s Rainbow monthly meeting today, sending a big thanks to Magdy and Em for introducing lots of gorgeous little boys and girls to Combat Academy Milton Keynes ! I can see it’s a wonderful way to raise self esteem and inner confidence. See u very soon!
“Just wanted to say thanks you again for today. Al the kids (and staff) had an amazing time. Really enjoyed it. I got home and tried it out on my other half haha! But I really appreciate it. It was so beneficial and it’s an amazing thing for young people to be taught. I will be in touch to book something for summer!”
“Thank you to Jo and Claire , we have all had a fantastic day with you and learnt so much ! Can’t wait to do more training soon”.
“Well done lads what an inspiration you are to your community and a satellite for others keep up the good work with your constant inspirational tactics!”
“I massively recommend this! I’ve never looked forward to exercise like I do this! I turn up stressed and tired. I leave smiling and relaxed, but with energy to deal with the rest of the week! I work as hard as I can which may not be as good as someone else, or slightly better than another. But it doesn’t matter, we do what we can and help each other. We all have personal goals and limits! I love the fact it’s still exercise, with opportunities to tone and improve on cardio. Just a good chance to learn a skill too, and skills I could genuinely use. If I’m fortunate enough to never have to use what I’ve learnt, I can say I’ve got fit and laughed learning them! I got asked to accompany a friend, this wouldn’t have interested me before I tried it. But I haven’t looked back since!! Great fun, great exercise, great fellow combat academics and a fab instructor”.
“Would just like to say a big Thank you to Lisa Logan for the time and encouragement she have to my son James at boot camp. James wasn’t sure he’d like it, but loved it so much that he had to be 15 minutes early everyday and has asked to join the academy. Thanks again Lisa”.
“A big thank you to Lisa Logan for a fab week at the kids boot camp last week! Kai enjoyed every minute and has loved sharing with us what he’s learnt He’s looking forward to joining in September. Highly recommended!”
“Just wanted to say a big thank-you to Lisa for all her help and encouragement Lisa gave to my children at boot camp. My daughter is very shy, and I was a little concerned she wouldn’t participate in all the activities – however, Lisa was brilliant with all the children and I’m pleased to say my daughter enjoyed, participated and grew more confident as the week went on. Both my children are booked to do boot camp again at the end of August – I would say to any parent thinking about their child attending combat academy – go for it!”
“I write this on behalf of my youngest daughter (11 years) who attended the combat academy you held on 28th/7 she had a great time and learnt a lot in a short week and enjoyed the way you taught and put across some valuable safety issues she is very keen to continue and extend on what she knows. To all parents who read this may I encourage you to take a look at what Lisa and her academy can offer your child boy or girl. It’s not just about defence which granted in this day and age is important but more importantly it builds character and gives each child confidence helps them work as part of a team and as individuals. I watched a few sessions and have to say it was very enjoyable watching all the kids having fun but more importantly watching this lady’s dedication to teaching these kids how to stay safe. I highly recommend this to everyone. Thanks Lisa from me and my daughter”.
“Shout out to Combat Academy Cambridge. Sent Indy on their introductory self defence course today and she had a blast. She had to go on her own because her friend was sick which was a bit daunting but lovely people, great instructor and she learnt loads. Definitely recommended for teens and adults”.
“Do you keep telling yourself “I must get fit” but never get around to doing anything about it? Well if so, this is the moment you can do something about it by coming along to join us at one of Combat Academy Cambridge’s boot camps. Believe me it’ll be worth it and I guarantee you’ll love it as much as I do (and all the others in our group). I met Lisa Logan a couple of months ago at a business event and was immediately sold on the idea of getting fit whilst also learning some valuable self defence skills. I am so pleased I signed up for the introductory course and have really enjoyed the boot camps ever since. Every week you do something different, learn new moves (with funny names!), push yourself physically, feel yourself getting fitter, and without fail, laugh a lot. It is strangely enjoyable being wrestled to the ground or even better wrestling others to the ground and without a doubt you’ll leave with a smile on your face (and maybe a little sweat!). You may be sore or stiff the next day but you will be hooked and will be counting down the days until the next boot camp. We are very lucky to have an amazing instructor in Lisa who is so encouraging and supportive and makes everyone feel welcome no matter what stage you are at. So, don’t put it off any longer, come and join in our fun!”
“If you are considering having a go at self defence or just want to improve your fitness I would highly recommend you give Combat Academy Cambridge a go. Lisa is an inspirational instructor, she is warm and friendly and instantly puts you at ease and is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about her subject.
The introductory session is great value and involves several hours of practical work. At the end of it I felt much better prepared if I was ever attacked but also it was great as ‘just’ a fitness class. Lisa’s teaching methods ensure that she caters for all levels of fitness from those like me who have done none to others who clearly regularly participate in exercise classes. She ensures that you are all pushed but each to the edge of your own limits.
I was surprised to find that I loved it so much that I’ve joined her weekly boot camps on a Tuesday evening in Cambourne. They are great fun, we all have a laugh whilst practicing self defence moves and improving our general fitness levels. Everyone is very friendly and supportive and each session is different with a mix of general cardio and self defence. It’s suitable for all fitness levels. I’d never have thought it would be the kind of thing I’d enjoy but now it’s one of the highlights of my week”.
“I went to the ‘beginners self defence course’ yesterday and it was a great experience! the techniques are easy to remember, it’s fun and most importantly, I left the course feeling much more self-confident than before. I highly recommend it to everyone, especially women”.
“What a great day this was. Thanks to fabulous instructor Lisa Logan and partner in crime, Patrick. Enjoyed both the psychology behind it and the physical bit”.
“Combat Academy ran three sessions for students at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Lisa and her colleagues did a fantastic job! The classes were well-organised, a lot of fun and we learnt a huge amount. Thank you Lisa!”
“Over the past month I participated in a three-session self defence class taught by Combat Academy Cambridge and it was fantastic! Lisa and the other instructors taught the course with sensitivity and clarity. I walked away from the classes with a new-found confidence in myself and in my own strength. Self defence is an invaluable skill to have and Combat Academy Cambridge will give you the tools you need to stay safe. I was very satisfied with this course and look forward to taking a boot camp with them!”
“I attended combat training self defence class in December. It was great fun and I learned how to defend myself at the same time. The instructors were excellent. The demonstrations were easy to follow and everyone was actively engaged from the beginning to the end. Few simple moves I learned will definitely help me to protect myself in any dangerous situation in the future!”
“Magdy from Combat Academy is so enthusiastic about self defence and works with every body’s personal needs to make sure every one attending the course gets the most out of it. It is seriously fun way to educate yourself and keep fit same time. Warmly recommended to anybody”.
“Combat academy is fantastic for exercise and learning self defence in a fun and informative environment. Classes are very professionally run with excellent instructors where you learn so much every lesson. I feel confident that I could defend myself if put in a situation where I needed to”.
“If you want to know how to defend yourself then this is the course for you. We learned several manoeuvres, how to shield ourselves and most importantly the psychology on what to do in various scenarios. The course was well structured with a friendly atmosphere which encouraged all of us to enjoy ourselves and have a go”
“Combat academy for me is a fantastic well rounded system in which teaches you everything about surviving and not only that but doing it correctly according to law which, most systems don’t do shockingly! Magdy not only teaches you step by step but is an incredibly inspirational man. You will not be disappointed. Give it a go and challenge yourself!”
That was the most amazing course I have ever done. I am now a regular training student and I absolutely love it. The fitness training was fabulous but the self defence was better than anything I had ever done before. You simply have to do it!
I had very low confidence because I had been bullied at school. All that has changed now and I have made so many new friends. Thank you Combat Academy
James – Aylesbury
Without doubt one of the best things I have ever done! The fitness training was amazing and the self defence skills that I have learned will stay with me forever. I now have confidence that I never thought I would have…
