The Certificate

Level 3 Personal Safety, Security and Self Defence Certificate

The Level 3 Personal Safety, Security and Self Defence Certificate is an advanced certificate, mapped at level three against common UK SDMAG level descriptors, with level 3 denoting the complexity of the qualification and its size being set at 13 credits (130 notional hours of learning) as a certificate.

The course itself can be delivered either as blended learning, with some taught and online content, or solely online. The physical unit, however, needs to be completed as a taught session, though completion of this session is optional.

Award

Following the course, successful graduates will be awarded the Certificate in Security, Personal Safety and Self Defence and will be able to use the letters: SDMAG Cert after their name. The certificate is awarded by the UK Self Defence and Martial Arts Guild (UK SDMAG) and graduates automatically qualify for provisional membership after completing the course (subject to the necessary fidelity checks). Graduates who wish to embark upon a career within the industry, and who do not already hold a training or teaching qualification can go on to complete the additional instructor units to become licenced and certified self defence instructors through UK SDMAG, although the teaching route is not a prerequisite (licencing terms and conditions apply).

About the UK SDMAG

UK SDMAG is a not for profit company operating under charter with the purpose of providing support, quality control, training, and education to the self defence and martial arts industry in the UK. UK SDMAG also provides Enhanced DBS criminality checks and insurances to self defence and martial arts instructors and offers membership to those who are approved, vetted and checked. Once approved, instructors can apply to become licenced by UK SDMAG and operate as approved self defence instructors.

Entry Criteria

  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have the ability to study at this academic level
  • Previous Level 2 qualifications are required, such as: GCSE, NVQ Level 2
  • Applicants without the qualifications, but with related work experience may be considered

Length of Study

The course contains 13 units spread over 8 modules. It is anticipated that around 130 learning hours is required to complete the course.

The course is delivered through blended learning with lectures, seminars and workshops. A full online learning version is also available with tutor support, webinars and recorded lectures.

MODULE 3: SELF DEFENCE

UNIT 7 – Tactics and physical self defence (demonstration) (report)
UNIT 8 – Types of attack and criminal method (case history report)

MODULE 4: PSYCHOLOGY

UNIT 9 – Broad-based psychology (exam) (critical literature review)

After successful completion of this course, you will receive a level 3 certificate, which is mapped against common UK SDMAG level descriptors at level 3 for the complexity. As a certificate, the award is the equivalent of 3 A-levels using the same criteria. The certificate is highly technical and can serve as a springboard to go on to the advanced level 5 diploma, a course that compares to foundation degree level.
